If I delete a userpic, and upload a new one and give it the same keyword, will it show up in all my old entries that specified the old pic of that name? Or are those entries looking for the old url?

I'm not sure I want to jeopardize the icons in my old posts just to test it, but if I ever do find out, I'll be sure to let you know.

As far as I know, if you delete a picture, LJ will show whatever you have specified as your default at the time of viewing (except maybe for that cache thing that J was talking about). If you delete your journal, it shows your last default picture.

Someone lightened this icon for me, so I deleted the old one and gave this one the exact same name. It replaced it in all the right places.

It can be done, my icons have retained the same names for about a year and a half despite having themselves changed about three times.

The keywords are case-sensitive.  If you accidentally mess up the keyword case, you can go back and correct it at any time later on and all the previous instances that end up flagged as being identical to your current keyword string variable will then change to the new picture.

At least that's how it has always worked for me. o_O
