I was up before 9:00 because I had to get my car's transmission fluid changed. So I did that. I mowed the lawn. I raked it. I even did the trimming, which I seldom do. I took some stuff over to my mom. I went to the bank. I picked up my photos (from camping). I got some things at the hardware store. I did two loads of laundry and Cyn hung them on the line for me (yay, solar clothes dryer!) and folded it for me. I got some flowers and we planted them.

So here's the story on the transmission fluid:
A couple of weeks ago, I took my car to one of those quick oil change places where they check everything. The guy told me that my transmission fluid was pretty burnt. He said he could change it for me, and it would cost $40. I thought that might be a bit steep so I passed. Today I took it to my usual mechanic, when I went to pick it up I learned that it cost me $100! $45 labor, $35 filter kit, $20 fluid, $2 environmental disposal fee, and tax. So with the filter kit added, it becomes a case of you-get-what-you-pay-for. But then, he tells me that the fluid looked fine. (I figured with over 100K miles, it probably did need changing.) So I guess the quick-change place guy was trying to scam me.

I try to change oils and fluids before they start to look iffy, it lengthens the life of engines and transmissions by a long way.
The $2 disposal fee makes me smile, We get that charge too, on tyres, batteries and oils. I started my working life as a garage mechanic, back then we sold used oil, got a £1 for each used battery, and could get £25 for a worn out but remouldable lorry tyre, all considered perks of the job. How times change;)

I've been pretty poor at that lately. I had totally forgotten about the transmission.

It was cold today, with occasional sun. The rain didn't start until after eight.

I had a good weekend. I hope you did too.
