Shhh, don't tell anyone, but I think Freebird is highly overrated. In fact, I find it annoying. Hey Jude soars high above it, no pun intended.
Every Memorial Day weekend my favorite radio station (online at www.kfox.com) plays the Top 500 rock songs, as voted on by its listeners. For about two weeks prior to the weekend, listeners are each supposed to submit their top 5 rock songs. This year is the first year I was able to listen to the Top 15. This year (it changes drastically every year), Hey Jude was Number 5, Freebird was Number 2, and Stairway to Heaven was Number 1. (Last year, You Can't Always Get What You Want was Number 1 - this year it was Number 15.)
Actually, I think they're both good songs that are highly overrated (as is "Stairway to Heaven"). lonita mentioned that those two songs were opposed in a best song contest, and I felt it interesting because those two songs mean the exact same thing to me, in the stated respect.
Our local classic rock station doesn that same thing. You can see it here (http://www.wklh.com/500.asp). Pretty similar.
