Now I'm remembering the fright I felt when it looked like Bush would win the election.

One of my Democratic senators voted to approve the nomination. Russ Feingold has a record of splitting form party lines. I applaud him for that, to an extent. He said that a nominee has never been turned down on purely ideological grounds before, and that this was not the place for partisan politics. He's right on that count, but Ashcroft's record indicates that he will be quite happy to interpret the law the way he sees fit. I can't help but get the feeling he's eager to get a chance to interpret the law the way the right wing intends. That is, the way the bible intends.

I agree....

I have a weird feeling in my stomach.....

I sure hope things don't change too much in 4 years...

I've never forgotten my fright. I'm actually disappointed that other people, including yourself, could have forgotten. Ashcroft, this new federal Office and related tax cut to assist so-called faith-based charity groups, etc. etc. etc., it's all very scary and nauseating. Will the new Office assist charity-based activities by non-theist religions such as Buddhists or Druids? If it doesn't, it's absolutely *illegal*. The thought that religious efforts represent "where the compassion" is makes me angry. I feel like walking up to George W. Bush with Angie and M. and many other compassionate friends of mine who don't believe in a God and dare him to tell us that we're incapable of compassionate acts. Not to mention the fact that organized religions are traditional instigators of hate and murder.

None of which has even been addressed on Anarchy, which doesn't really surprise me either. Growl, grumble, mutter, groan.

What's that assistance for charities that you're talking about. I haven't heard anything about it.

Monday, Bush announced the creation of a new White House office focused solely on helping religious and community groups obtain federal tax dollars to
fund social service work. The new White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives will report directly to the president.

The agency will be charged with distributing billions of federal dollars to a variety of religious groups and charities over the next 10 years. In essence, the groups would be competing with a number of established organizations --
including federal agencies -- for a set amount of tax dollars.

It seems to me this is far more important than Bill Clinton's new office.

I just can't believe you guys hadn't heard about this before. Maybe it's because you were just returning from your Minneapolis adventure? Then again, if you hadn't, maybe lots of other people missed it as well. I couldn't quite understand the silence about it, overall.

That's why state approved, school administration led, optional school prayer is wrong too. It just makes it all that much more obvious who are the heathens.

I don't think they are upset now...it sort of bothered them in the beginning...but they now know that religion is a VERY personal and private thing...and it is really NO ones business..

and yes please...do add me, I am adding you right now...Ü

oh yes!
