If you go to http://www.livejournal.com/tools/tellafriend.bml (which is where that envelope takes you, but without the details of any particular post) you can send a message from your LJ account. I use it sometimes to avoid revealing my real e-mail address. The reply comes back to you in the same way you get the comment notifications.

I wonder if it works for free accounts?
