I went camping with scouts, this weekend. It was nice. The weather was good - sunny, warm, but not too warm. Friday was really damp. At six o'clock it was 55° and partly cloudy but you could see your breath. Saturday morning, there was fog and frost. It was sunny and well into the sixties in the afternoon. The temperature dropped quickly after dark, but it didn't get as cold on sunday as it was on saturday.
We went backpacking. We did about eight miles, and I had a light pack, but I wasn't doing so well afterwards. My knee started bothering me about halfway through the hike. I think it was because of a trail that had steps, that we went down and back up. On sunday, I didn't carry a pack, but I was still stiff from the day before, so it didn't feel too good. And today I'm very stiff in my ankles, knees thighs and hips. I used to be able to handle harder hiking than this with little trouble. I once went on a thirty mile tip in the Porcupine Mountains of Upper Michigan, on an ankle that I had sprained the weekend before. Seems like the worst pain on that trip was the bruises on my hips from my pack's hip belt.
The trails in the Kettle Moraine area are very hilly. It is all glacial terrain - eskers, kettles, kames and moraines. Sunday's hike had a net elevation loss of thirty feet, but I'd swear every 100 feet of trail had a gain or loss of thirty feet. To see part of our trail, go here, and enter "Greenbush Kettle" and choose Wisconsin.
We did the backpacking, but we stayed in a campground, so we had real food for a couple of the meals. One of the guys deep fried a turkey. Mmmm, it was good. A twenty pound turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and corn, for thirteen people. One of the guys had the flu on thursday so he didn't come along, but he came up for dinner and brought his wife and mother.
And then we had green eggs and ham for breakfast on sunday morning.
We got on the trail pretty early, but I still didn't get home until 2:30. I was hoping to spend more time with Cindy that day. :-( We went to the symphony in the evening. :-)
