I used to know a bloke who did some ground crew work for a Lancaster bomber from WW2, one of the last still flying. They would hire it out for all sorts of things. One time they were hired by Led Zeppelin to fly over Knebworth (an outdoor concert place) and drop orange ping pong balls on the crowd during the show.
No, I don't know why.
My friend was taken along to help tip the balls out, but after flying around various parts of England, they couldn't find the concert, and had to go home with thousands of little orange balls still in their boxes.

Wouldn't that really /hurt/, dropping pingpong balls from a plane on a crowd? Unless they were those hollow wiffle-ball types, but still.. sounds like a lawsuit in the making. Probably a good thing that they never found the concert, all in all..
