I'm really not happy with the coverage of this "war". This article says that there are several hundred prisoners in Cuba, and they're not prisoners of war, according to our government, but may other countries are saying they should be, but I haven't yet heard what they're being detained for. One photo caption says they are "Taliban and al-Qaida detainees," but nobody ever seems to mentin the actual charges. Okay, al-Qaida means they were members of the terrorist group. I can see that. But are they going to try all Taliban members for terrorism too? What the heck is going on?
And then there's this:
Prison guards said that leaders were emerging among the detainees and that one, according to The Miami Herald, tried to use Muslim prayer time to rally prisoners.
A soldier observed the prisoner, a beefy, one-legged man, chanting in Arabic what a linguist translated as "Be strong. Allah will save us," the Herald reported Monday.
It quoted a guard, Pvt. Jeremiah Rose, as saying guards put a stop to the chanting and told the man to pray.
What, they're not allowed morale building? Let's just break their will? See, nowhere does it say this guy was fomenting rebellion.

Date: 2002-01-22 08:27 am (UTC)From:A federal judge in Los Angeles agreed Monday to hear a petition challenging the detentions from U.S. civil rights advocates, including former Attorney General Ramsey Clark. The petition alleges that the detainees are being held in violation of the Geneva Conventions and the U.S. Constitution. It demands that U.S. authorities bring the suspects before a court and define the charges against them.
The Dutch government demanded Monday that the United States recognize the detainees as prisoners of war with rights under the Geneva Conventions. In the fight [against terrorism], we need to uphold our norms and values, Foreign Affairs Minister Jozias van Aartsen said. That applies to prisoners, too.
The president of the Council of Europes parliamentary assembly, Lord David Russell-Johnston, said pictures of the captives published over the weekend raised troubling questions about their treatment. Were supposed to be better than terrorists, he said.
"Be strong, Allah will save us" doesn't sound like "let's get 'em boys" to me. Where is this supposed threat?
