Yesterday morning there was a sausage spill at the Marquette interchange on I43. Ten tons of Johnsonville bratwurst spread over three lanes. I wonder how they clean that up? Front end loaders and a dump truck? I hate to think of a greasy freeway.

It all just came back to me, as if it were yesterday...

about two miles from my house one night when I was around ten or eleven a semi tried to beat a commuter train across a railroad crossing but didn't make it. Nobody was hurt, thank goodness, but the train sheared the trailer clear in half, and there were packages and frozen chunks of Australian beef all over the road.

My father and I were returning home from Philadelphia for some reason, and when he saw the situation--this was during the recession in the 80s, and he was out of work at the time--he picked up one of the intact packages--it must have weighed sixty pounds--and brought it home. I think we tried to cook it every which way and found it much too tough for human consumption despite hours of stewing...
