so far, the united states government and the "coalition" have done exactly as they said they would. they say they will facilitate a broadbased government in afghanistan not led by the northern alliance. i have no reason to believe they will do otherwise. it is in our interest, no matter how cynically you see it, for that to happen. it will be much easier to get that pipeline built with a stable popular government in kabul.
I don't disagree with you. Actually, I don't have much of an opinion about it at all. Except that I'm not very optimistic about a workable solution being reached.
I'm pretty worried that we'll leave another set of problems when we do eventually leave Afghanistan. I haven't been talking about it, mostly because I didn't feel like fighting with people about it for nothing.

From day 1, the US has said it has wanted a broadbased government, the problem is how hard this is to set up, with so many tribes and so many long term feudes and crap like that. I'm sure the UN peacekeeping forces will be in this country for some time (after we leave. And of course, some will stay for the UN force...) I do think the way the Northern Alliance (or whatever you wish to call them,) took Kabul did surprise everyone quite a bit. I just hope they don't get snotty when the US comes in to repair airports for food distribution and begins to help set up a new government.
of course they left.......neither the taliban or the northern alliance are great folk to be around when they are fighting......
on another note, a bit of food is getting in.....the WFP is working hard at feeding people by the millions......please note that 60% (or about $800 million) of the WFP budget comes from the USA.....with Japan being the next largest contributor at about ($260 million)......
I am hoping that we do things right this time and complete what we say we are going to do...I can only hope that everyoone has learned from the past after seeing how things can truly get worse... I am all about being positive these days I guess...
