My Aunt was robbed. At gunpoint. In front of her house. She was coming home with the money from her shop. She got out of the car, and found a gun barrel between her eyes. When the attackers went around to the other side of the car, she ran off screaming for help. People were all around, but nobody cared to act. She finally found a police officer, and he didn't seem to care enough to hurry.
Her asshole husband says, no they're not going to move. This is their home and this is where they're staying (they live in small town Alabama). He also made her get rid of her dogs. He didn't like them and didn't want to feed them. She's sure they would have protected her.
They weren't injured, beyond a few bruises.

Date: 2001-10-31 08:21 am (UTC)From:So I wonder if this could be someone she 'knows' or friends of people she knows. Because it sounds like someone knew she would have a good amount of money ON her, to make it worth the trouble and risk of the crime.
I hope her husband and her are able to sit down and make some future plans that would provide EVERYone with a sense of security. And I don't mean 'getting a gun' type stuff. The dogs sound like a good idea, I hope she can talk about this again with him. :( Also, she may want to find some way to NOT bring home money with her, especially if she also suspects this was planned. Because they may try it again, to be honest. I think the statistics are something like 30% of houses robbed are hit again. Although this wasn't a house crime.
Since you know the 'layout' of the situation better, maybe you could print out some helpful suggestions from websites or talk to her about any ideas you have (stun guns? pepper spray? Car alarm she could have set off with a touch (since she likely had the keys in her hand at the time.)...? Taking a self defense course? Whatever might make HER feel safer, I think its really important someone sit down and talk with her and make sure she is ok, and not afraid and is doing what will make her feel better. :(

Date: 2001-10-31 09:09 am (UTC)From:if somebody knew she was carrying her shop money home, i do not think it wouldn't matter where she lived........and i know that when a gun is involved, many people who might help, back off.....not making excuses for people not helping, but people have to think about their own safety, too.......
i hope your aunt can get through this and on with her life without having to watch over her shoulder every minute of the day......

Date: 2001-10-31 09:40 am (UTC)From:She'd given up on the idea of divorce years ago.
She's going to get a dog the next time she get's an offer, whether he likes it or not.
She doesn't feel safe there in that small hick town. Not at home or at her shop. I doubt if there's anything she can do with the money. I'm not certain they knew she had the shop's money, but it certainly is possible. She said they almost took her shoulder when they ripped her purse off it.
She has no idea why nobody (including the police officer) seemed to care about what was goin on. I didn't hear if it seemed like a racial thing. The town is full of poor blacks, but I think her neighborhood is white.
Thanks, everybody.
im sorry..
