Nobody knows how to make a good apology these days. You just say you're sorry, and why you're sorry. Don't say why you made the mistake, say what you did wrong and why you're sorry. Explaining why you made the mistake comes off as an attempt to justify your actions - the exact opposite of an apology. Explaining what you did wrong lets the person know that you understand the problem and therefore can prevent it from happening again. Explaining why you're sorry let's the person know that you understand how they feel about it.
