Okay, what are the decent Vampire movies?
Ms Fledermaus mentioned Coppola's Dracula.
Then there was the original one with Bela Lugosi. Were there many others?
Near Dark is one of my personal favorites.
Kronos. Was that one in Spanish?
The Hunger - Bowie.
Blade.
Nosferatu (or three).
The Lost Boys.
From Dusk Till Dawn.
Interview with the Vampire.
Shadow of the Vampire (Malkovich, Dafoe). I meant to see that one.
Vampire Hunter D. Anime, anyone?
The Night Stalker.
What else?
Then there are the bad ones. I suppose there are quite a few Hammer films. How about that Leslie Nielsen one? Blacula?

Date: 2001-10-22 10:36 pm (UTC)From:VAMPYR (Silent era film that comes as close to recreating a genuine dreamstate as you will find. One of the first vampire films, and probably the best.)
MARTIN (Very sad and disturbing movie about a teenager coming of age who thinks he's a vampire, made by George Romero, who made NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD.)
DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS (Belgian, from the early '70s. Imagine a Marlene Dietrich vampire movie.)
MR. VAMPIRE (The first of many early '80s Hong Kong comedy/horrors where Taoist monks hunt down hopping vampire corpses.)
LIPS OF BLOOD (Ultra-low budget French film by a guy named Jean Rollin, who used vampires in almost all his films. Quiet, slow, somber, and I think excrutiatingly beautiful, but definately an acquired taste.)
VAMPYROS LESBOS (Again, an acquired taste. German film, also from the '70s. Exploitation meets horror meets hippie psychadelica.)
The second segment of Mario Bava's BLACK SABBATH is a vampire story called THE WURDULAK, and its terrifying.
FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS (Polanski), BLOOD FOR DRACULA (Warhol/Paul Morrissey), BRIDES OF DRACULA (Hammer), BLOOD SPATTERED BRIDE... There are some other Spanish and Mexican vampire films that are supposed to be really good, but it's an area I haven't ventured into much. Both SALEM'S LOT and LIFEFORCE by Tobe Hooper are pretty good, and FRIGHT NIGHT definately deserves a mention.
