There were 210 names on the list.

Assuming this torture was real, what the heck was this petition supposed to achieve?

You know, I think I heard about this..but I heard it WAS a joke, since a bonsaicat would immediately be smacked down my the Humane Soceity, aspca, etcetra...

If it was on the net, why wouldn't the Humane Society release a statement about it if it was real? Just guessing here...

I wrote back to the person and let them know that it wasn't real.

I'm glad you like the card :)
I thought you deserved one today.

I give my cats those kinds of brain massages and they love it!

Yeah..kitty brain-massages...mmmmm....

You could start a business!

And besides, the kitten couldn't actually survive at all like that.

There have been quite a few indignant anilal overs get on the "close down the website" bandwagon. even the people who know it is a joke don't think it is funny, and want it shut down because they think it promotes violence to animals.

And yes, the Humane Society is one of them.

It is a good question...where do you draw the line on a joke?

Date: 2001-08-23 01:04 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] cynnerth.livejournal.com
When people start to draw lines, there will always be someone who wants to cross it. Freedom of speech means we have to be subjected to things we may find objectionable, like gun promotion propaganda, racist tripe, right-wing religious hype, and such. Sometimes I find twisted humor funny and sometimes I don't...sometimes sex jokes are hilarious but suddenly not when it comes from certain people in my office. Even *I* can't figure out where to draw my own line!

Neither can I..it all seems so contexual. Maybe the BonsaiKitty thing was meant to be so ludicrous it was funny?

Ms Eff, who loved your hunter joke from the other day:)

Date: 2001-08-23 01:26 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] acedia.livejournal.com
Never never never draw lines. If something is funny, I laugh; if it's not, I don't. There ends my participation and jurisdiction in someone else's expression.

Date: 2001-08-23 01:29 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
But the question is asked because at some point, an innocent person could be hurt as a result of some "joke".

Date: 2001-08-23 02:14 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] acedia.livejournal.com
But you see, you've already had to begin adding secondary conditions onto the argument. If someone is hurt, that's a separate scenario. Though one may seem like a natural extension of the other, owning a gun and shooting someone are entirely different, unconnected actions.

If someone is hurt as a result of some joke, we would have to attempt the arduous and convoluted task of defining "as a result." It's a huge leap. If a person steals my car and injures somebody with it, to a certain extent that person was hurt "as a result" of me buying the car in the first place, but in no conceivable way would I be held responsible.

Expression is held to its own unique standard, not in a small way based on "sticks and stones... but names will never hurt you." Speech is not a justifiable cause of behavior or action. If 'John' does something because of hearing a joke, or even if someone directly tells him to do it, we can't and shouldn't hold the speaker guilty of John's crime. John has free will, and he has a responsibility to use it. If he is incapable of exercising his will, then, if John isn't set-off by what someone says today, he will be soon enough. A kid who sets fire to his house after watching Beavis and Butthead has serious problems that have nothing to do with the TV show, and would inevitably have done it given any other stimulus. It's an accident and a tragedy, but no matter how desperate we are to find bad guys, to imbue the frightening chaos with comforting notions of cause and effect, we can't blame the speaker.

I agree

but...

To say that the only connected actions are thought and deed seems an oversimplification.

Anyway...
It seems simple to most people that if some guy sees a rape fantasy porn video, and proceeds to kill some girl trying to duplicate it, that the tragedy could have been prevented by banning porn. And that may be true, but the thing that is lost on them is that the guy would eventually do something similar because that's the way he is. He just would have had to think of something on his own.

i got one of those fwds also.. i told the person who sent me it that it wasn't real also, but the first time i saw the site i wanted to throw up. it doesn't say -anywhere- that it's a joke and i personally think that it's in very bad taste, i'm not very easily offended.

Date: 2001-08-23 01:09 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] anabug.livejournal.com
what i want to know is how they photoshopped cats into glass jars so seamlessly. i know it isn't real but there's a part of me that thinks it is, too. tough call to make.

Date: 2001-08-23 01:27 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
It is kind of a gray area.

I think it is a funny site. The kittens were actually put into the jars for the pictures, but only for acouiple of minutes. That is not a very nice thing to do, but it can hardly be called torture. And there are always those assholes who decide it would be fun to try something like this, even though it is quite obvious to me that it is impossible. I mean, some of the techniques metnitoned there are pure fiction.

I don't think we should, or even can, stop everything in the world that might give someone a bad idea.

The website (http://www.bonsaikitten.com) has been up for a long time, and IMHO it is pretty funny.

I'm almost certain this email was created as an advertisement by the makers of the site themselves.

I wondered about that.
