storms and outages
Aug. 13th, 2021 11:30 pmTuesday night we had some bad storms predicted. It was supposed to be high winds. I figured it wouldn't get too bad, and I was right - for us. It got really windy, but probably only 30 mph winds. Around 7:30 pm, I felt something, like the power almost going out. Turns out that's when most people lost power. All across the state, high winds caused trees to topple, due to soggy ground after days of heavy rains.
We Energies said there were 225,000 customers without power, in southeastern Wisconsin. That was the largest outage in company history. A friend said he got power back around 2 am. Wednesday morning, a coworker said his power was restored at 7 am. By the end of the day I had kinda forgotten about it.
Thursday morning I heard another coworker say his parents were still out, and his sister got power back that morning. Another guy said he still didn't have power. I checked the news and they were saying it might still be a few days for a few customers, due to the degree of damage to certain subsystems. A lot of businesses didn't get power back until today. I saw a news story where a grocery store had to throw out tens of thousands of dollars worth of food.
As of 9:00 this morning (Friday), they said there were still almost 18,000 customers without power. Amazing!
