dryer works
Mar. 27th, 2021 03:20 pmI couldn't get the blower fan off the shaft.
The guy in the video said that if you couldn't turn it off, you could chisel it off. I didn't really want to do that, but I couldn't see an alternative. I used my drill to make a lot of holes, then the Dremel tool to cut the rest of the way around the center of the hub. This didn't work because there were ribs on the back of the hub that were too deep to get at with the Dremel tool. I got enough of it cut away that I could chisel if off the rest of the way.
Then there was only the plastic part at the center, so I chiseled that off, but molded into the blower was a metal threaded insert, where it screws onto the end of the shaft. Now what? A new motor is $200. Cheaper than a new dryer, but tough to deal with because it's only an insert threaded onto the end of the shaft.
Since had I gotten the blower off the end of the shaft, I would be able to remove the motor. This is important if I was going to put a new motor. But I realized if I took the motor out, and to my workbench, I could maybe get the insert off there.
I had never used the Dremel tool before this, but I looked through the attachments and there were tiny cutting wheels. Like grinding wheels but thin, to be used like saw blades on metal. Perfect. So I cut grooves through on opposite sides, and was able to spread it a bit with a screwdriver, and yank it off with pliers. Success!
I was able to reassemble it all without incident, except that it was halfway back together before I realized I hadn't reconnected the belt. And now it works.

The threaded insert on the table below, along with one piece of the cut-off wheel, which broke just as I decided I had cut enough. I was happy that I just barely cut into the shaft and threads, on one side.
