Apr. 4th, 2021 12:38 pmThe started with vaccinating health care workers. Then other frontline workers and people over 65. They went through a list of qualifications, and on Monday they're opening eligibility to everyone 16 and over.
I've found it weird because of how I haven't been able to get an appointment, when it seems like everyone I know has gotten theirs. One of the risk factors is obesity, so Wisconsin made the vaccine eligible to people who are overweight. They set the criteria at 25 or higher BMI. One friend is 5'11" and 175 pounds, so he qualified. Another friend got his through his children's school. Another works for a health care company. Since he works from home, he was on their low priority list, but they went through their vaccine supply faster than expected so he got in early. His wife is a teacher, so she got hers. Cindy got hers because they opened it to people 55 and over, at some point. Certain areas of Milwaukee are at higher risk, due to poverty or close conditions, so I know some people in those zip codes who got theirs. And so on.
Meanwhile, I don't qualify under any of the criteria, or belong to any organization that has them. They announced opening to everyone over a week ago, but nobody is even making appointments for us until that time.
I won't say I'm frustrated by all of this, because I'm not in a huge rush. I'm happy to let people who are at a higher risk to go ahead of me. It's just annoying.
I was talking to a coworker in Mexico. They have 1.1 million people fully vaccinated, compared to Wisconsin's 1.2 million. But their percentage is 0.8% compared with our 20%. They do have more people who have received at least one dose, though.
The governor mandated that people wear masks in all public places. The Republicans took it to the supreme court, saying that he was overreaching his authority. Nevermind the fact that it wasn't a law. It was unenforceable in a legal sense. Fortunately, most establishments are still requiring them, and I've seen very few people out without masks.
