Pete Souza
Feb. 14th, 2021 01:33 pmLast week our photographers' group had Pete Souza give a presentation via Zoom.
Pete was the official chief White House photographer for President Obama, and also one of Reagan's. He captured nearly two million frames in Obama's eight years. By all accounts, Pete is a great guy. There's a documentary on him that you should watch. It's called The Way I See It, and you can see it for free on The Peacock. It gives insight on how the White House photographer works, but also great insight on Obama himself. I've heard that people get a little teary when watching it.
So Pete spoke to us for about an hour, sharing his images and talking about them, and answering questions. It was pretty interesting. We had about 50 people on the call. We were fortunate that he greatly reduced his usual speaking fee for our small nonprofit.
He's put out a couple of books recently. Obama: An Intimate Portrait and Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents. He started throwing "shade" at Trump on his Twitter feed. It was all responses to Things Trump had done, or the current situation in the White House, by showing photos of how things had been during Obama's tenure. He says he had never been very politically active, but that changed when he saw what Trump was doing. But he didn't get political for our talk. He just showed his photos and talked a bit about Obama.
