trees down

Had a tree cut down today. It was a silver maple that was dying. The bark died on one side, so the branches above were giving out. The leaves were fairly sparse on the whole thing, so it wasn't much of a tree anymore.

My neighbor needed to dead ashes cut down, so he offered to find someone to do the work. At first I was kind of annoyed that he took so long to do it, but it turned out well because we had such a wet autumn that the lawns would have gotten all torn up. Today was sunny, and the ground was frozen - perfect.

There was a dead section near the base that was a bit rotted, and had had ants burrowing in it, but the rest of the wood was all fine.

They started at 8 am. I didn't go out until closer to 9:00. The neighbor had hired a kid from the school where he works. The three of us dragged branches over to the chipper, then sections of log over to my woodpile. The smallest branches I kept for kindling. The neighbor took all the wood chips to use in his landscaping. We finished up around 1:00. The neighbor has a dump trailer for his lawn tractor, which was perfect for moving the really big sections. The smaller sections were moved in a couple of wheelbarrows.

Now I just have a huge pile of dirt and chips from the stump grinder. No idea what I'm going to do with it.

That was a lot of work. I'm hurting. Surprisingly, my knees are in the worst shape. I guess it was from walking over the lumpy frozen ground. My back is tired.

Our tree and one of the neighbor's trees were sortof in line with each other, when viewed from the house, so that's all really open now. It's going to take some getting used to. There's a vehicle storage lot there, so it's even more visible than it was before. Not the best, but I'm not sure what we can do about it.
