3:30 AM.

"Kevin."
"Huh?"
"The sump pump's not running."

sigh

The crock was full, but the pump wouldn't run. The secondary crock was full and getting fuller. I had to unplug it so it wouldn't discharge into the one that wasn't running. I had to call Cyn down to help because the water level was rising as I watched. We pretty much had to bail out the crock for the next two hours, until the stores opened and I could buy a new pump. Fortunately, Home Depot opens at 6:00. It seemed strange to be at the store in the middle of the night.

A little before 7:00 I got it hooked up and running. It ran for over ten minutes. The water had backed all they way into the drain tile around the foundation. That's why the crock hadn't overflowed, and the water wasn't rising in that one. Unfortunately, with the crock full, the water started seeping up through the cracks in the basement floor. So now we've got some damp carpet in the finished side.

I'm just glad we noticed it all when we did.

And I've had two songs running through my head. One, from the Who album I've had on. Wide awake in the middle of the night. The other is Johnny Cash. How high's the water, mama? Five feet high and rising.

Nearby is the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, home to a diverse population of nesting seabirds. You can see some white specks in the air around the peninsula, which are the birds.

Probably the last pictures from the trip that I'll be posting. I hope you enjoyed them.
