The guy said he was trying to establish himself in this area. the signs
in his portfolio were not from around here. My dad thinks he just stopped
by the road and took pictures of signs he liked. He had done one for a
shop up the street that looked good, but it was rather small. My dad
thinks he was merely a sign painter (since he did a good job at
lettering) and had little experience in constructing them and even less
in hanging them.

Since he was ouit of work, and didn't have grocery money, he needed money
up front to buy supplies, so he ended up with about half the price of the
sign. At this time he has less than the agreed price, and he's not going
to get more.

On Tuesday morning the guy said he was going out to get some white carbon
paper to transfer the lettering onto the sign. Dad says, "where are you
going to go?" He said he'd find someplace. My dad, thinkiing he'd never
see the guy agian, said he'd get it himself. When he came back the guy
was gone. He'd left a note saying he went out for "some stuff they'd
need." He came back an hour later, empty handed. He said he went for the
carbon paper. Dad said, "but I told you that's what I went for!" He
shrugged and changed the conversation. He's the kind of guy who'd tell
you the sky was blue, and you'd look up to verify that.

How can he call on a friday and say he would deliver it on Tuesday and
install it on Thursday, when all he had done was the letters cut out and
maybe the wood cut? And then call on Wednesday and say he'd deliver *and*
install it on Friday? He brought it on a Monday, and it *still* took he
*and* my dad two days to finish it. The whole thing was "I'll tell him
what he wants to hear now, and when I talk to him next, I'll tell him
what he wants to hear."

I enjoyed this post very much. It reminded me of many times I found handymen to help me around this 1888 house. I once hired a man who promised to put in deadbolts for $75 a piece. I found out later, they were not deadbolts at all but $8 locks from the hardware store.

I guess once has to look at what is important in life and I have learned not to make scenes about not so important issues. On the other hand, there is a 'warrier' inside that yearns for justice.

The guy who was supposed to remove my fallen apple tree plus some other stumps that another guy never got around to removing plus prune other trees for me was supposed to do some of the job a week ago Monday and finish it up that Friday. Monday night he called with some excuse and said it would be Tuesday. Tuesday night he called to assure me he was on top of it but it would be Wednesday.... Yada yada yada all the way through last Saturday. So when he didn't show up last Monday, I got an estimate from another guy, who said he wasn't sure when all the work could be done but probably Wednesday or Thursday. Tuesday when I got home every bit of it was done! And that's really a long story way shortened.

At least he called every day! :-D

Yeah, but that only made it worse, really, because every day I expected him to do the work. It took me an entire week of that before I called someone else. Also, every morning I put out my shovel so he could dig up the two old rose bushes himself (can you imagine a tree guy who doesn't have his own shovel?) plus every morning I put out the sign to avoid leaning on my house post that needs repair. It was just a pain. Story gets worse, but I'm at work, gotta go.

I was half joking, because the guy wouldn't show up, and then my dad still wouldn't hear from him for a couple of days.
