I was looking through my entries, thinking I should post more of my trip to Mexico, when I realized I hadn't posted this one on DW.

Dave picked me up at the airport, and after lunch we drove out to Dainzú, an old Zapotec site.

Dainzú
This is looking up, out of a tomb.

It is known to have been inhabited since around 700 bc, with the main phase of occupation and development between 200 bce and 350 ce.

This is the north half of the ball court. It has been excavated and restored, though it was originally faced with stucco.

Seated in the ball court are a couple. Dave spoke with the man. He seemed to be some sort of medicine man and said he was in the area to do a rain dance, because of the drought of the last year or more. He said he spoke many languages, though I would guess, based on how well he spoke English, that he didn't speak many of them well.

But he gave a little ceremony for us. We stood with our eyes closed, and he did some chanting and thumping of the ground. We were to feel closer to the land. He asked me how I felt, and I didn't want to say that I was still feeling a little queasy from my trip, but I probably should have. I didn't really have an answer for him. I would like to believe there is energy all around us, that we can tap into, but I can never feel it.

The above shows most of the site - it's not very big. There's only a little more to the right, plus the temple I'm standing on. In the near right, there is a roof. Under it, at the back, is a wall of stone carvings. I don't know why I didn't get a photo, except that it was behind chain link fence, which wouldn't stop my cell phone. I guess I got distracted.

Here's a carving of a jaguar over a doorway inside a tomb.

Nice photos.
I think it is easy to get overwhelmed at sites like those, lots of heat and walking.
