I had forgotten to crosspost my last couple of entries to DW...

I finally got a splitter. The trees were cut down 2-1/2 years ago, and the pieces have been piled up since then. I tried getting the splitter in 2020 but there were Covid issues, like both the rental company's splitters were down and their maintenance company couldn't fix them. I forget why I didn't do it last year. So I finally got around to it. Unfortunately, the maple was starting to rot. It's all very soft. The ash is still in good shape.

A coworker who lives nearby is trying to get rid of wood, so he brought a trailer load over for me. Unfortunately, it wasn't all cut down to reasonable lengths, so I had to get out the chainsaw and cut it myself. That was actually a tough job. And some of the logs were too big for me to cut, so I'll have to split them and cut them afterward.

I was able to get the splitter delivered, and it arrived a bit before 9am. I almost killed myself getting it to the back yard. I knew it would be heavy, I started moving it and it was fine - until I got off the driveway. I ended up needing Cindy's help to get it all the way back there.

We started with the easy stuff - the pieces that were small enough to pick up. Then the big ones that I had to roll over to the splitter and do on the ground. We worked from about 9:00 to 5:00, with a couple of half-hour breaks. I moved the wood, Cindy ran the switch.

It was interesting to see what was on and under the logs. Mostly fungus on it. One type was hen of the woods, I think. The others I have no idea. There were lots of bugs - centipedes, slugs, worms, daddy longlegs and ant nests. I was disappointed to have opened up some carpenter bee nests. And we saw a couple of big black toads.

So now I'm hurting. That was tough work. I keep stretching out my back, but pretty much everything is feeling it. Feet, knees, back and shoulders, hands, forearms. And I've got a bit of sunburn, and some cuts and scrapes. I'm just glad the weather was OK. The high temp today was 75°. It was the first day that cool in over a week. I still drank a couple of bottles of Gatorade, and a lot of water.
