Before visiting the palenque for the tour, we had a few minutes to kill, so we walked over to the old church in the tiny town of Santa Catarina Minas.

In the courtyard of the church.

I noticed the steeples were in pretty bad shape - the had the front of the church fenced off - but I didn't realize how bad until I looked at my photos.

There are three bells in this photo. Look how badly damaged the small one is. It looks like it once fell to the ground!
After the palenque, we drove down the road.

There was a town called San Baltazar Chichicapam.

This roadside memorial was somewhere along the way. No simple cross for this victim!

Back on the main road, these figures stood at the gas station. They are characters from 1970's TV. On the left is Red Grasshopper. He was the main character in a show that was a parody of superhero shows. On the right is the beloved El Chapo. He was a little boy who was an orphan. All the children in the show were played by adults, which is why he looks so weird. I mean, you know, weirder than you'd expect.

Come back soon, Matatlan Oaxaca "capital of the world of mezcal"

Then we stopped at a cafe in Mitlan.

Beer and guacamole - with grasshopers.

Then we walked down the street to the church. You will be seeing many churches, since they're always so fancy, and they make good images!

"Look, look, I've got it! I'm balancing the crown! Jesus, look!"

Mambo Jesus

This was odd. A covered area with a mural on the wall. Illustrating a Bible verse, I think. But then they added a light and covered some of it up. And now the area stores buckets and barrels of glass jars that votives were in.

And behind a fence from that same area, Zapotec ruins.

They rang the bells as we were leaving. They were grateful? This was the only bell I saw on the trip, that was mounted in a yoke. The others were all hanging by rope or chain.
