I was going to take a half day and work on the drywall early, and then do it again in the evening. Try to take off at the last second, meant I still worked about an hour and a half today. That's OK because I want to leave early tomorrow.
I ran to the hardware store to pick up a gallon of joint compound ($6.50) in between meetings. By the time I got around to using it, it was almost lunch time, so I waited until we were done with the kitchen, and then spread the plastic again, and mudded the north and east walls. It seemed to go OK.
As a reward I went to the park. And stopped for an oil change. By the time I was done with all that it was getting near supper time. So I went out and got my car washed, and then picked up supper at the deli in the grocery store.
After supper I started with the second coat of mud on the west wall. That plus cleanup took less than two hours. After that, it was still light out, so I took the scrap wood from the garage to the shed and swept the garage. The appliances are being delivered tomorrow, and we need a place to put them. Two of them won't be installed until all the cabinets are done. The delivery people were going to "install" the stove and fridge, but we decided we don't want them in here until all the dust is finished, so we'll have to do that ourselves.
Funny, my memory of mudding is: apply mud, sand. Apply mud, sand. Apply mud, sand. It turns out there's very little sanding after the first coat. You only take off the high spots, so the second coat goes on smooth. Then there's a little sanding after the second coat, so you know what needs the third coat. I'm sure I'll be doing a fourth coat in some problem spots.
It takes longer than I expected for the mud to dry. There was one inside corner (above the fridge) that I forgot to smooth out the mud. I had to chisel it out, and it was still wet underneath.
