I took a long lunch and went to Lion's Den yesterday afternoon. It was really nice. The sun was mostly out, the temperature was around 20°F, no wind and few people. The trails were packed snow, and hadn't turned to ice yet, so walking was fine. The stairs down to the lake were tricky, though.
It's been really cold lately, but there haven't been any winds to stir up waves. Or ships, for that matter. So the lake iced up and it was smooth, like glass. And then at some point, there was wind or waves which caused the ice to break up and be pushed toward shore.
That's actually ice out there.
Today Cindy and I went down. I was hoping she'd get a chance to see that ice piled up, but most of it had moved on. It was still cool. We spent a lot of time on the beach. Or rather, several feet above it, due to the ice buildup over the winter.
When a breeze or a wave came up, you could hear the ice creaking and clinking.
This last picture is all ice. You can maybe see the cracks between the different sheets. Occasionally a wave would come in. Well, less a wave and more a slight swell. The ice was flexible enough swell with it. It would splash against the shoreline down below me, and then waves would reflect back out. They would radiate outward in a circle with me at its center. That's how calm the water was - that you could see waves going back out from shore!
