Jupiter and Saturn. I've been watching them all summer. The two of them near each other. I didn't realize they were getting closer. I guess because I hadn't really been watching since it got cold. And then I heard about the conjunction that would happen on the solstice. A couple of weeks ago, as I was getting ready for bed, I remembered I'd wanted to go out and see them. Too late, and I'd try another night. That was our last clear night.
The big day (or night) was yesterday. It was sunny in the morning, so I had hope, but it had clouded over by midafternoon. Tonight we were pulling out of the driveway to go to my sisters, when I realized there were stars out. Just down the road, in the open, I looked, and saw no bright stars in the southwest. We got out in the country, past the light pollution, and I pulled over to look. Nothing. I checked google Sky View, and they were below the horizon.
Damn. I really wanted to see this. The photos are cool, but I wanted to see with my own eyes how close they were.
Also, it annoys the hell out of my that they were calling it the "Christmas Star." Not only was it not on Christmas, but it was on the Solstice. Why weren't they calling it the Solstice Star?
