There's an odd form of conflict that I run into sometimes. The nature of that conflict invariably causes one particular side to lose.
My country wants peace, and yours wants war. Since neither of us is willing to give in to the other, we must fight about it. So even if my country wins the fight, we lose because we fought.
I run into this at work all the time. I feel we should do something the same way all the time, and someone else disagrees. So I do it my way, and he does it his. Is there a balance? Is each of us happy? No. I wanted consistency. I lose.
This is why you have to have cooperation. You can't always win by brute force.
