I saw a pileated woodpecker for the first time. It flew below me as I was standing on the bluff at Devil's Lake a couple of weeks ago.
I might have seen a snowy owl a few weeks ago. That seems strange, especially this early in the year, but I can't imagine what else it would have been. I saw something moving, out of the corner of my eye. I looked up and saw a white bird. For an instant I thought it was a seagull, but then I realized the wings were rounded on the end, and rather wide, unlike the narrow, pointy seagull wings. It disappeared from view in maybe a second.
The winter birds are starting to come back to the yard. The juncos returned last week. Someone mentioned robins just now, and I can't think when was the last time I saw one in the yard.
On the way home from work yesterday, I saw a heron fly low over the road.
