I generally drive fast. I like driving, but I prefer it to be interesting. Going faster is one way to make it less boring. Otherwise, I'd rather be wherever I'm going, which is another reason to drive fast.
I drive at the customary ten-over-the-limit. When someone's doing five-over, I need to remind myself that it's OK. When someone's doing the speed limit, I need to remind myself that it's not something to get annoyed about.
The road that our house is on has a speed limit of 55 for the two miles. But until recently it wasn't posted. I learned in driver's ed many years ago, that if a speed limit is not posted, it's 55 mph. And our is probably the only road in the area with a limit of 55. But few people seemed to realize it's 55 there. I couldn't even convince Cyn of that for a long time. So while I routinely drove 65 there, sometimes I'd get behind someone doing what they thought was the speed limit - 20 mph slower than I wanted to drive.
A couple of years ago they posted speed limit signs, but not everybody seems to have noticed. I still get caught behind slowpokes sometimes. Now I've heard a rumor that they're thinking of lowering it to 45. The road is straight, with not a whole lot of intersections or driveways in those two miles. I'm going to have a lot of trouble keeping my speed down, if they change it. There's another road nearby that's 25. It used to be 45, so it's a constant struggle to keep it below 35.
This weekend we went to Indiana. It's a bit over a five-hour drive, if traffic is good. It was, for the most part. I was doing 80, when the traffic let me. That's ten-over on the freeways in Wisconsin, but I think 25-over for much of the trip in Illinois. Nobody seems to care down there. But I think for the hour and a half of the trip, I was only passed by two cars.
