There are three keys to a good party. Good guests, good food and good weather.
But of course if you're indoors, the weather is irrelevant (though you still need to make sure everyone's basically comfortable). So it's really good guests and good food.
But of course the food is secondary to the guests. And you might not have food, only drink. And good drink is not as key as good food. So it's really only good guests.
I like to invite as many people as possible to our parties. Basically, that's as many people as will fit in the space available. We have a big enough yard to host a lot of people, but there are two limiting factors. One, foodstuffs are in the kitchen, so you can't have so many people that the kitchen gets so jammed people can't get food. Drinks are in the garage so that helps. Plus, food is available all day, so people can come in any time. The second limiting factor is shelter from the weather. This year, everybody was gather in the shade of the pine tree, and creeping into the neighbor's yard. If it had rained, the house and garage would have been pretty crowded.
But, the people. The more people you have, the more likely it is that people will have other people to talk to. Because they're more likely to find somebody they can talk to, either because they know each other, or because there are more people to choose from. It's more work with smaller groups. You have to make sure that your guests are high quality and can mingle well, or that they all know each other, or that you have activities for them.
This big party that we do every couple three years, we invite tons of people and provide food, drink and place. The food is always good, and the weather is usually great.
