I'd been having trouble with my phone last week. Such that I called to order a new one. I was thwarted, though. The person I was dealing with was having computer issues. She actually called me back a couple of hours later, when she was back in business. Then she had to transfer me to someone else, and hung up on me. I didn't hear the phone when she called back a few minutes later, so I didn't end up getting the phone ordered. It was a busy week, so I never had time for lots of things like that.
We went to New York this weekend. Shortly before takeoff, the announcement was that we needed to put our phones in airplane mode. I did so and put it back in my pocket. When we left our seats we looked around them and didn't see anything left behind. When I got into the jetway, I realized I didn't have my phone, so I went back to the plane. Apparently I wasn't allowed to get back on it, so one of the flight crew went back to look for it and didn't find it. I wanted to ask him to check again, but I didn't feel assertive enough to annoy him that much.
I tried calling Delta customer service, but the automated voice told me to fill out a lost property form on the website. That took me ten minutes on Cindy's phone. Two days later, I have not gotten any messages from them about it. Then I ordered a new phone. It arrives Tuesday.
So of course there are all of these things I wish I'd done differently. Since I was having trouble with the phone, I'd meant to download all the photos from it. But it was a busy week, and that was one of the things I didn't have time to do. I wish I'd had it passcode locked, at least when I went to NYC. OK, I wish I had called the phone company from the airport, to suspend service, soon after I was sure I no longer had it. But I needed time to think about what to do, and also, I dumped my bag out on the bed at the hotel, just to make sure it wasn't really in there.
I assume the phone slipped out of my back pocket.
There are two theories as to what happened to it after that. It's black, and therefore not easy to see, so nobody saw it. But I have difficulty believing nobody has yet found it, so whomever found it (cleaning person?) pocketed it.
But what seems more likely to me is that a fellow passenger saw it and grabbed it. We were in the last row, nobody behind us. I was on the aisle. Across from me was a teenage girl and her little brother. There was nothing behind us but a restroom. Most people, when they leave the restroom, they just walk right out, usually shutting the door behind them. But this one young man (I'd describe him as skater-ish), had some issue coming out the door. There were a few second between the door opening, and him coming by me. So I think the phone had fallen out of my pocket, and he saw it when he opened the door to exit the restroom. He paused and feigned going back in for something, while checking out whether anyone was watching. He grabbed it, stepped back to stand up, and walked on out. If I had looked back to see what the commotion was, he could have handed it to me, "hey, is this your phone?"
