I'm on Dreamwidth now. I've been unhappy with the Russian connection on LiveJournal. LJ was once a place for the Russian resistance. But then they moved all the servers to Russia, so Russian LJer's would be subject to Russian law, which forbids dissidence. Aside from general political disagreements being effectively outlawed, the LGBT community suffered, since that's all against the law too.

So I would like not to support LJ with my content. But my friends are still there, so I can't really leave. At this point my plan is to cross-post from DW to LJ. Comment on whichever platform you're on. I wish everything was in the same place, to have more conversation and interaction between people, but to be honest, that doesn't happen much anymore anyway.

As far as supporting LJ with content, I'm a permanent user there, so they no longer get any payments from me. And I don't see ads, so I don't support them in that way.

I backed up my entire LJ journal here on DW, so if I pull the plug on LJ, I don't really lose much. Or if something happens to LJ, and my journal there vanishes, I've still got everything here. I will still be going to LJ to read my friends page there, so don't worry about me missing you. I will continue to read everything you post.

Edit: It did not bring photos over. They're still all hosted by LJ. So that would kinda suck if they disappeared. But DW does have photo hosting.

I switched from using Photobucket (which I did not pay for) to using Smugmug (which I do pay for) and it was a WONDERFUL change. I was able to "import" all my Photobucket pics. Unfortunately that broke all the links. REALLY important links are being re-established.

Man, they really messed up Photobucket when they went to the for-pay model. I still see broken Photobucket images all over the internet.

UGH YES it drives me crazy. I still haven't moved my pics and forgot where I was even GOING to move them. geez

While I cannot blame them for wanting to make the service "pay only" I didn't find their service -worth- paying for. For me it was frequently broken and changes were almost always done in a very disrespectful way.

From what I recall hearing about it, I was just amazed at the price level they started at.

Yes, the price was about 3 times what I'm paying Smugmug, for WAY less.

I was able to move all the pictures from Photobucket to Smugmug easily, however Photobucket had scrambled up my albums so badly with all their "upgrades" that it took a while to sort them back out.
