We went out to eat tonight. They offered us either a 20 minute wait for a table for two, or we could be seated right away and share a table. One of the couple that sat down at the other end of the 6-seat table was one of my high school teachers. At one point, his wife said to Cindy that she heard her order the veggie sandwich and thought it sounded good so she ordered the same. I took this as my opening. "Your name is Jack, right? You were one of my teachers." He didn't seem to react much, so I wasn't sure what he was thinking - "oh no, here it comes again"? But we ended up talking for half an hour. He and his wife are gregarious. I remember him as a fun teacher.
He didn't remember me, of course, after *cough* years, but he mentioned a few teachers from my time that he's still in touch with. Most of them were ones I remember well, and got along well with. I told him to say hi for me the next time he gets together with his fellow retirees.
Anyway, it was fun talking with them. I wouldn't have expected we'd chat for half an hour.
I took Jack's Ancient Civilization course. It was a college prep course, but I took it anyway because I was interested in the subject. He probably gave me a C. I think he went easy on me. The class required me to write a lot of papers.
He mentioned that the son of one of the art teachers is an artist. He did the cover for Bon Iver's (Grammy winning) first album. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_Euclide
When Cindy and I were out walking today, we stopped in the old cemetery here in town. There were some graves of the Harms family. I mentioned that my best friend when I was little was Stevie Harms. His dad was a teacher, but I haven't seen him in a while. So I asked Jack if he knew how Carl is. He said that he's doing well. And that he saw "Stevie" not long ago. And that he still calls him Stevie. Steve has apparently just retired from the Army.
