When Gale Norton was Colorado's Attorney General, she contended that the Endangered Species Act was unconstitutional. George W Bush has asked congress to take the right to petition to add a species to the endangered species list away from the public, and give the Secretary of the Interior (Norton) sole discretion on whether to add or remove a species from the list.

I suppose that you could say that her position on animals should have nothing to do with whether she should be granted this power, but it is still wrong.

And supposedly conservative Republicans want *less* government, not *more.* Would someone please tell me how this decreases government's influence? How does this help the American public? Sheesh.

Hey, Freekee, no fair, don't get me going, I'm having a good time on vacation! Pphhbbtt!

Because without any concerhn for the environment, there is less work to be done.

Ooops, sorry! Um... Enjoy your vacation?

I just hope this country can survive the 'term of hell' we are being forced to endure.

It will be a long recovery.

Yes, what happen to OUR voice, it seems to be absent right now. There seems to be a tremendous need, with talk radio, Limbaugh at-all, and Curve Ball (Hard Ball) where is our coast to coast representative voice?

so what exactly is the process by which a species gets added to the list now?

Date: 2001-06-28 09:58 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
We can petition.

Okay, that sounds like we ask for its addition, and she grants or denies the petition. I'm not certain. But it still sounds like public pressure would be an important factor, and that if the public has no right to an official petitioning, we could easily be ignored.

I got this from my Denlines e-newsletter.

and how does a species get removed from the list now?

Couldn't tell you.

When I get home, I'll send you the article that I got, but it doesn't say much more than I did.

maybe it's just my old age, but i'm suspicious of alarmist stuff like that. i'm all for riling up the public against W, but i would rather it was done with accuracy.

I agree. Thanks for calling me on this stuff. At the very least we will become more familiar with the governmental process.

I can't imagine this is not a bad thing, though.

you know, i hate to admit it, but goofy is at least partially responsible for my scepticism of left wing rhetoric. watching him spew his nionsense from the right, made mw aware of just how damaging to a legitimate stance exaggeration and hyperbole can be.
