I planted a tree today. An American beech that's about as tall as I am. They have smooth silver bark that remains that way throughout its lifetime. And their leaves turn yellow in the fall.

I took a long lunch and went down to Minors Garden Center. I had hoped to order a bigger one, but the guy I talked to said they only have them in pots. They don't dig the bigger ones because beeches don't do well that way.

So this one was small enough to fit in my car, though I now have a lot of dirt in there. I need to vacuum it out, but I'll have to do that tomorrow, since I barely got this thing planted before it got dark.

I've been meaning to plant a tree ever since our big silver maple died many years ago. It's amazing how long I can manage to not getting around to doing something. Beeches are not fast-growing trees, so ten years ago would have been a much better time to plant this one. But it's in the ground now, so let's hope it survives the winter.

I'm trying to be optimistic, but yeah, I hope so too.
