Yesterday I took a long lunch, due to the eclipse. It was cloudy, but the crescent of the sun kinda filtered through the clouds, so it wasn't a total loss. We had about 80% of totality, but it wasn't very dim - it felt like a regular cloudy day. I never felt that driving to where the eclipse was total was something I needed to do. But seeing the photos and hearing the stories of the people who were there, I feel like I really missed something special.

In the evening I went out bought some shelves for the basement. I've been feeling kinda antsy to get something done. I'm annoyed that the garage is at a standstill. They installed the overhead door a week ago Saturday. The electrician is supposed to call me to set up a day to come in and do the work. I don't want to start moving stuff back in because it might get in his way.

Gardening is generally slow in August, but it should be picking up soon.

Today Cindy and I took the day off to go to the zoo. The niece is going off to college, so we wanted to take her and her brother to the zoo like we used to do when they were little. But she doesn't like zoos, so we took Jake. So that was nice.

So today felt like a Saturday.

I don't like zoos either.

I am in the path of totality in 2024, so I will research the glasses and sit in my yard to watch that one. People were really crazy all over during the televised coverage of Monday's eclipse.

I don't like the idea that these animals are cooped up in the zoo. The bigger the animal, the more range they need. Even the big outdoor pens are too small for the big cats or the elephants.

I feel the same way about some pets. Through most of her childhood, my sister's family had a dog - a black lab. I never saw it out of its cage in the garage. Of course, I wasn't over there all that often, and I have no idea how often she was actually out of her pen. But I wonder what my niece thought of that situation, as it compares to the zoo.

But anyway, I don't think it's a big deal for other animals. Fish, birds, most reptiles, for example.

But aside from the cages, I think zoos do important work. Study, preservation and outreach.

Hmm, I wonder if that dog is WHY she does not like zoos?

I kind of like the way the panda research is done. They bred are released into the wild, in a preserve where people are severely limited. Tagged, and watched over, but left to their own devices. That to me is rational research and preservation on a endangered species.

That's a great photo!

What's your favorite animal at the zoo?

Favorite animal? I don't think I have one. There are so many that are great to see. The big cats are great. The little nocturnal ones. The fabulous birds. The big primates. The cute little primates. They had a sloth. I think that was new.

What are your favorites?

Nothing beats a penguin for me. :)

Yeah, they're fun. They're like footballs that swim. :-)

I love the Milwaukee zoo. It's been decades since we were there last.

That is a great eclipse photo...and unusual. In Sevilla there was only a tiny bite out of the sun and we missed even that since we were on a plane when it happened.

I didn't realize you'd have any of it over there.

It was a mini-eclipse, as if somethong had taken a bit out of the sun.

That's a great photo! I think we had something like 77% totality. I experienced the event in my back yard - my back to the sun, head down. The sky was BLUE, and the yard got a little darker plus definitely cooler. I had expected more darkness and quietness. Rob got a small pinhole display of the crescent sun. I forgot to try to capture it with a collander, and didn't take pics because I knew there'd be so many far better than mine!

That's what I was thinking, but by the time the day came, I decided I needed to record what I saw. It was too cloudy for the pinhole or colander.
