Mike and Jill are in town. Heather and Greg picked them up at the airport yesterday, so we went down to Kenosha in the snow to have dinner with them all.

Then Mike and Jill came up here to spend the day with us. We went out to lunch, and then stopped by the Fermentorium for a visit. Mike does all their graphic design, and he had never been there to see the place and visit the owner, so we had some beers and got a tour.

We went to Karl Ratzch for dinner. The place is a Milwaukee institution. It, along with Mader's, remains the standard bearer for German restaurants in the city. It's been in business sine 1904 (but only family owned until the 1990's). Very German and very good.

Sounds like a good way to spend Christmas with the "kids"
:).

I went to Maders once decades ago. I just looked at their menus online and as we were just in Munich eating at German restaurant...the cost of the same dishes is about half the price in Munich in really nice places.
Wine is really expensive in Germany but I'd like to know the beer prices at a place like Maders.

Cindy and I went to Mader's a few years back. We weren't impressed. Fancy prices and not so fancy food.

There's a world of difference between Mader's and Ratzch's. No comparison.

Ah, ok. Kevin said you weren't impressed with Mader's either and I've never been to Ratzch's. One day...
:)
Manolo and I love German food...so meat and potato based.
:D

I had duck on lentils. Cyn had Hungarian goulash with spaetzle. Jill had a sausage sampler platter. Mike had prime rib. He said the meat was good but not great. The rest of us thought our meals were very good. The desserts were excellent - apfel strudel, cheesecake, black forest torte.

Prime Rib is so not German as in you'll never find that in Germany. LOL
Oddly, Goulash with spaetzel is very popular in Germany (Bavaria mostly)...one of our favourite foods there.
