I posted the following on Facebook:

"People who advocate genocide get unfriended. Relatives or no."

I'm not sure if he is so horrible that he actually liked the idea, or too stupid to realize that's what he was saying.

He probably thinks I unfriended him just because he's conservative. My actual conservative friends know I don't do that.



But anyway, after posting the above, which was somewhat vague, I got 13 likes. Not one of those people were conservative. Interesting, no?

A relation had reposted a meme advocating turning the Middle East into glass. I should have said something to him, but I didn't. I'm not sure why, exactly. Partly because I don't like making waves among the family. Partly because I didn't really want to beat my head on that wall.

I'm with you all the way on that, Kevin. There are some things I won't tolerate even for family. But then you know that.

Exactly why I don't go out of my way to seek out family members on FB. Too much opportunity for rancor.

I have unfollowed several family members who promote an extreme point of view that is just filled with hate and violence I haven't unfriended because well, that would just create a big headache for my parents and I don't want that - since they are there and I am here.

But yay! Life is more peaceful without all the added negativity!

I agree with you completely, even though I know that a fair number of people in the middle east would like to turn us to glass...

I have been frustrated with Fakebook recently, largely because of the constant barrage of unsourced memes. In my case they almost all come from Bernie supporters, of which I am one. I find it hard not to correct them, which strains friendships. I don't think most people take the time to consider the veracity, morality, or practicality of the memes they share. I think they see something that cleverly fits all their preconceived notions and/or feeds their fears and they simply click share. I tried to start a tangential conversation with a friend today about a meme touting something Castro did that was good for Cuba. I was accused of White Mansplaining. I tried to talk to them in a private message, and was treated to an angry rant. So much anger, fed by the meme machine.

As previously stated, this is why I left facebook back in July of 2012: the political commentary from people I personally knew, people I had not only met but worked with and considered good acquaintances of, started having the most apoplectic commentary about the election at that time. My choices were to combat it, try to ignore it or to leave FB. Since I knew I couldn't ignore it and I didn't have the interest and energy to have daily sparring matches, I quit.

Lately, friends have been asking for me to reopen a FB account, but I really haven't missed it. This sort of commentary doesn't convince me that I should come back!
