Did you see the rectilinear watermelons? There was a picture in our paper, but I couldn't find any online. They're grown in glass cubes.

do they come with a little hammer on a chain and a sign that says "in case of hunger, break glass"?

I found a couple pictures... (NY Times requires registration)
  • NY Times (better picture) (http://www.nytimes.com/library/review/20010617bigp.4.jpg.html)
  • another picture (http://www.uinta6.k12.wy.us/WWW/Urie/Kinder/Eyre/Food/image/square_watermelon.gif)

Reminds me of that Bonsai Kittens site someone
at Ana's BBS had posted about and was so upset over. Did you see it? The kittens were raised in
jars to cause them to grow miniturized. (I am
fairly certain the whole thing was a joke, but
there were others who though differently)

Yeah, that one was floating around here too. It was definitely a joke, but even the people who realized that were upset, because it promoted jokes about violence, or something.

I thought it was kinda funny.

I think the official name for the cats was "rectilinear kittens" hence my calling these "rectilinear watermelons." :-)

At $80 a pop, that's a pretty expensive price to pay just so they won't roll out of your frig!

$80? Is that the Japanese price? I'm sure you could divide that by ten for the U.S version.

Yes you are probably right, that was the Japanese price. I didn't see how they grew them but I figure they must grow them in a square mold, so I imagine they wouldn't taste as good as the old fashioned ones...but hey...never know!
