Our bagger at the grocery store last night used many bags for not so many items. One full-sized bag held only three boxes of cereal. Another had two boxes of cereal, two little boxes of plastic baggies and three other small, light items. When we got home, Cyn grabbed the half gallon of milk and the five-gallon jug of water, so I started scooping up the rest of the bags. They were so light I decided to see how many I could carry.

You know how when a grocery bag is full, you can't carry it in one hand, because the handles aren't close enough together? Since these were all half empty, there was room for most of them in one hand. I carried all but two with my left hand, and one heavier bag in my right. When I got in the house, I put that one bag on my left hand with the rest. Then Cyn carried the heaviest bag in, so I took that one from her too. I couldn't really hold onto it for more than a couple of seconds, but I bet I could have if I'd repositioned all the handles in my hand.

So the cereal boxes were expensive and light. And we got a lot of produce, which also tends to be light but expensive. The meat was very expensive, but somewhat heavy. We stocked up on value packs, so we bought a lot of it. This all went in seven or eight bags in total.

That happens a lot so I usually re-bag the items once they are in my trunk. I keep reusable bags in there and put the bags in that so I just have two sets of handles and maybe a few bags to carry. It's probably better if I brought the reusable bags in and had them pack those instead of getting plastic but I reuse the plastic ones all the time for other stuff and want them.

Well, I think it's easier to carry all the bags if they are less-full. I don't know if that will help you, but keep it in mind.

I've become very conscientious about recycling in recent years, so (like [livejournal.com profile] mellary4) I also keep several large reusable grocery bags in my truck to take into the grocery store with me. They are made of cloth.

Starting January 1, California is outlawing plastic bags, but I've already stopped using them whenever possible and request paper bags. I recycle both types anyway.

We have three of those plastic/cloth reusable bags, and three of the plastic bags in the car, for this purpose. The plastic ones from this store are heavy duty, and can be reused many times. The rest we get as paper bags, and we use those to collect our paper for recycling.

I hope they don't outlaw plastic bags here. I don't know what we'd put our trash in!

I should clarify. The law will just be for single-use bags given out at grocery stores. And upon further research, I discovered it does not go into effect until July 15, 2015, not January 1. I found an article about it here:

It's kinda weird that they're being banned for certain kinds of stores first.
