A couple of weeks ago, I dug the garden and hurt my back. I didn't feel like I did anything to it, it was just hurting after I came into the house. Since then, every few days, it hurts again, but not as bad as that first night. This morning it hurts worse than it did that first night. Painful. It hurts to walk.

Got together with a couple of guys from Drammit to drink whisky last night.

Sunday afternoon I put a fence around my mom's garden.

Saturday was the Highland Games. Didn't take any pictures.

When I pulled my lat muscle it did the same thing, it would heal a little, then get worse, then get better, and so on. I think it was because I did not let it heal completely before working again.

It doesn't seem like I've done anything more to it. Not sure why it can't heal.

I strained my left thumb two months ago and have been wearing a brace it still has not healed. Once a muscle or a tendon has been injured, it takes a long time to heal, and only with rest. I talked to my lymphedema therapist about it (she is a physical therapist) and she said it can sometimes take a soft tissue strain six months or more to heal. I am not sure what "soft tissue" means.

In anatomy, soft tissues are the tissues that connect, support, or surround other structures and organs of the body, not being bone. Soft tissue includes tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, fibrous tissues, fat, and synovial membranes (which are connective tissue), and muscles, nerves and blood vessels (which are not connective tissue).

Ah, so anything but bone and organs. I wonder if the fact that they are connective in nature is why they take so long to heal?

Dr. Seren recommends:

1. Take ibuprofen, not only to reduce pain and prevent you from tightening up against pain, but also to reduce inflammation.
2. Get checked out by a doctor.
3. Get a professional deep tissue massage.
4. Have a mojito.

Not necessarily in that order.

1. Did that tonight. Wish I'd thought of it before I left for work.
2. Eh.
3. Doesn't seem like that would help.
4. Margarita?

Oh jeez Kevin. It might be a good idea to find out if it's more than a muscle....it sounds like that to me.
I'm an expert at spine crap.
Off to the doctor with you.

You must get it rested otherwise it will never heal properly.

I hope it does feel better, and I agree with the other pieces of advice that people gave you.

I don't believe I ever slept well until I got one of these.

Chiropractor.
Sounds to me as if you may have just slightly rotated one vertebra and what you are feeling is a pinched nerve. Comes and goes as inflammation around it does. Stretching may help, definitely ice and ibuprofin. Getting it back in place AND anything else in your back that is slightly misplaced is important early.

Mostly the pain was in a line exptending from my spine to my right side. I had heat on it last night. Forgot the ibuprofin this morning. My posture when seated is the worst aggravator.

Sounds like a -slightly- rotated bit of spine to me. I've lived with back problems exactly like that (not currently, Dr Julie fixed my back, for which I am profoundly grateful.)
One of the issues with back problems is conditioning the muscles in our front. My remaining, nagging back issue resolved itself when I went back to work this spring and my muscles toned up. Eventually my chiropractor put my back in place one more time and it stayed fixed.

I hurt my back many years ago (twisting motion), and it hadn't given me any trouble in a long time. And I never got my front muscles conditioned.
