I forgot to mention, a day or two after this, I was working by the cacti, and pulling the grass that had crossed over the line into the garden. I reached down into it, and felt something hard and sharp. It was a cluster of spikes that I had broken off of a previous dead cacti.
I have two of them sitting next to my monitor. Where, out of the corner of my eye, they are kinda creepy looking, like spiders.
