After leaving Kilnaughton Bay, we went to Bowmore. It's the capital of the island, and about 850 people live there. It's the home of Bowmore distillery, and we stopped in there for a look around, but there was nobody to give us any whisky.

It's round, so the Devil would have no place to hide.

We went up to Caol Ila on the east coast, stopped in the shop and had a look around. Then we went back towards the middle of the island and visited a historic site.

Finlaggan

Finlaggan was the seat of the Lords of the Isles and of Clan Donald. These two islands in Loch Finlaggan, Eilean Mor (large island, which I'm standing on) and Eilean na Comhairle (council isle), were the administrative centre of the Lordship of the Isles during the 13th to 15th centuries.

This is a medieval chapel dedicated to St Findlugan. The graves date to the 1500's.

Then we walked back to the visitor's center, and up the drive.

There's a standing stone. It's about a meter and a half high. Maybe taller.

That's so cool that they covered the graves with glass. I wonder if the caretakers are scheduled to regularly clean it - I imagine they'd have to take glass cleaner to it once a week.

The church was really neat looking (and the plaster on the outside is really impressive). And it looks like lots of cool lichen.

And the goats just make me go "awww".

sheep, not goats

Aww - I thought sheep, then goats... I should have remembered the movie Babe.

I don't know. It seemed reasonably clean. The rain probably helps. The visitor's center was closed when we were there, or I could have asked.

We saw glass over some really old graves in one other place.

You've seen something I've never seen...a round church! I did know the principle behind then...no corners for the devil to hide...but I have never actually seen or visited one.
:)
I love ruins and old stones.
