I got my new glasses yesterday. I hate them. It's my second pair of progressive lenses (bifocals without lines). I had a lot of trouble adjusting to the first pair because, well, that's quite a change. This one is only a little better. There's so much variation in the way they make lenses these days. My first pair had some trick where they make the field of vision wider. This is the "normal" kind, where you have to look pretty much straight through the middle of the lenses for things to be in focus - for that distance. Nobody told me that about progressive lenses.

The next time I have to get new glasses, I think I'm either going to get bifocals or the surgery.

I didn't think I could get used to my latest progressive lenses either, but I did. It took a little while.

Yeah, but getting used to them and liking them are two different things. :-/

Well, to be more specific...

I got used to the progressives well enough that it was no longer a constant struggle to see well. But I still had issues with eye strain, which is what they were supposed to prevent.

Really? I have not had that problem at all... but hey... I am a tough old bird-let. ;^)

I rarely wear my glasses now unless I am driving at night on a route I don't know or I need to thread a needle or read small print. Glasses are a pain in the ass under good circumstances and to add the having to get used to something you don't like sucks.
The surgery is a scary thought though.

I'm only a little scared of the surgery. But I'm so used to wearing glasses I'd feel naked without them. They're a part of me. And they protect my eyes. I don't have to worry about swinging scissors around!

Well yes there is the scissors factor :D

I had lasik surgery nearly 14 years ago, but just for distance vision. I still have to wear readers. It's great not needing glasses to drive or see the stars or watch t.v. or a movie. I just buy the readers at Costco or some place like that. No more prescriptions needed.

That's pretty common after the surgery. I guess they can't really make your eyes 20/20, so they get the distance vision good, and leave you with readers.

I have found the shape of the lens has an affect on were that sweet spot is for each distance. Basically each pair has a learning curve. I spend a lot of time moving my head up and down and side to side to find the place where I can see. To read a paper book I generally take my glasses off and hold it an inch from my face. It is just easier. I have never worn lined bifocals, so I don't know if they are better or not.

My problem is that the zones that are out of the sweet spot, I can focus in them but they cause fatigue. But I can't detect fatigue right away. So it's only after looking for a while that I realize I'm looking through the wrong spot, but I don't look through just one spot over that period of time - so I can't tell what is right and what is wrong.

Hmmm... it sounds like your PD might be a little off, or if the lenses are narrow top to bottom, they shaved part of the zone off. Did you get them in a stone and mortar store, or on the internet?
