We keep a compost bucket on the back stoop during winter, for kitchen waste, so we don't have to trudge through the snow to reach the compost bin at the garden. Today Cindy opened the back door, and was surprised to see an opossum in it.

It kept its head down while we were checking it out, but climbed out after a few minutes, and wandered across the yard.

They're so disgusting! I don't know why, but I find those soooo creepy. Great photo, though. I can't believe how close you are!

They have a certain primal... ness to them. And beady eyes and pointy teeth.

This one was contained. :-) I stepped out the door for the first pic, but took the second one through the screen door as it was trying to climb out.

Big rats...and nasty characters. The compost bin is a food source. I guess you need to possum-proof it.

They remind me of big rats, too, but they're supposed to be pretty harmless, not as nasty as raccoons. I can't help shuddering when I see them, ew ew.

Possum-proof it? I don't really care - they don't eat much. :-) Although I did wonder who bent down some of the fence around my compost bin last spring. I assumed it was a raccoon, but it was probably this guy.

Just surprised? I'd be shocked, eek.

Time to get a cover for that there container. But you got a couple great pics.

These guys did a lot of the damage to our pond last summer. I know that they have a purpose, but they should have that purpose somewhere else than on our patio! ;^) If you don't mind them... more power to you.

It was both. We captured both in the live trap. The first capture was a big Opossum.

I'm not in love with Opossums. I don't hate them. They make me feel a bit icky stomach-ed when I look at their extremities but this one has a soft pretty coat.
