Today's Google Doodle is in honor of Jackie Robinson's 94th birthday. Funny, I just took a picture of Jackie Robinson Middle School in Milwaukee on Sunday. Or rather, the former Jackie Robinson Middle School. Which was previously known as Peckham Junion High School. That's how it appears on the National Historic Register. MPS closed Jackie Robinson a few years ago. As of 2011, it was supposed to be turned into affordable senior housing, but it didn't look like anything was happening.

Anyway, I just thought it was an interesting coincidence.

I went there for my entire junior high school experience. The only school I went to for every grade they offered. I went to several grade schools and two high schools.

This building is actually the second Jackie Robinson school building. When the school first started it was located on Burleigh St and consisted of two buildings. I started going to this school and moved to the new building with the school after sixth grade I think. One of the original buildings is now a target practice place for guns and bow and arrows.

After much googling around I see it was built in 1926. The reason I looked for that date is because there is a former middle school in East Lansing that looks very much like it and it's from around the same year.

It's historical name is Peckham Junior High, and I'm not sure when they changed its name to Jackie Robinson. I didn't spend a whole lot of time Googling, but I didn't find much info on it.

Funny how schools often look alike.
