I decided to make snickerdoodles. I thought I had my grandmother's recipe, but after a search of the recipe folder, it turned out that I did not. So then I looked in the church cookbooks, but it hadn't been entered there, either. Someone else's was in one of them, so I went with that.

After a quick scan of the ingredients, I realized we didn't have any shortening. I decided to substitute butter (it was to be half butter, half shortening). Just as I was getting started, I realized we didn't have any almond extract either. I decided to substitute amaretto. So...

They're very buttery tasting, and the kitchen smells like amaretto. :-)

Oh, and the recipe didn't call for cream of tartar. Which we have a lot of, since Cindy bought a jar the last time she made snickerdoodles. Hmm, I wonder what recipe she used. Probably found it onine and then threw it away.

Sounds like a great variation on a memorable family recipe.

I trust that the results are being well sampled by the family :)

Probably well sampled by the coworkers. :-) Cindy likes them but doesn't really eat that many. I should give some to my mom, but since she's the baker, I'm not sure how well she'll like them.

How could your mom not appreciate something you had baked for her?

You will get honest feedback on how your recipe differs from the traditional, but I think she'll be tickled pink that you tried and made the effort to have her sample them.

Seriously, I think what she would say, is, "why didn't you tell me you wanted cookies? I would have made them for you."

nom nom nom My favorite! But the cream of tartar is the best part! I can email you my grandma's recipe. Your grandma and mine probably got it from the same magazine!

I didn't even realize it didn't have it until after I was done!

I always picture my grandma getting recipes the traditional way, passed down through the generations, or whatever, but I know she had plenty of magazines.

Yeah, I used to picture that, too. I mean, some of my gma's recipes were family recipes, but a whole ton of them were *probably* from magazines, a popular way of trying new recipes at that time.

Amaretto shortbreads?
;)
They sound GOOD!

Butter, sugar and flour. Yep, pretty much. Except I'm not sure if the amaretto added much flavor. It sure made the oven smell good!

Snickerdoodles have cream of tartar in them so not sure what recipe you found. LOL I have my recipe if you need it sent to you.

As Donna said, it's apparently shortbread, with cinnamon sugar on top. :-)

I think we've got a recipe. I used the only one I found in three cookbooks, but a fourth had a more standard recipe.
