I joined our regular monthly photowalk on saturday. It was near the UWM campus on St. Patrick's day. It was in the early afternoon, and it was 70° and sunny - perfect!
I took more pics than usual, that seemed to want to be black and white.
But there is very little color in the original version. Cream city brick, dark brown and off-white garage doors. White bike, white shirt, blue jeans and I forget what color her scarf was. Probably a brown hat. I thought the blue jeans would unbalance it a little. Maybe the sepia tone I used is too close to the original, and you expect her jeans to be blue, so it bugs you.
B/W is all about form and texture. Color can be a distracting element.
Like that last one. You could see a blue sky, a maroon car, green bushes, and various tones of brown and grey, but none of that is important. All there is, is a guy with his dog, and they're in an alley.
And the first one. In color, the buliding behind the trees stands out.
Personally, I like the black and white photos where one item has been coloured. A particular flower or, leaf or, door, or whatever. It looks more crisp, and visual to me.
You know I love your photography. I just want to know what color the door is in the fourth pic. Also, you could have added in some green just to honor the holiday. ;)
