It heated up to 1° for my drive home tonight.

At 9:30 p.m., it was -3.

At least it's not windy.

After the zero mark, it got up to 4°. We had winds in the teens all day, until the sun went down. Windy enough to blow the empty garbage can across the yard.

I have to say that getting really cold weather past the midway point of January is something I can live with. 80 degrees on Thanksgiving - like I remember one year - is a little too freaky, but this near freezing/above freezing until Jan. 20 is totally doable.

I don't mind winter when it happens at its appropriate time. Actually, the springlike weather in early January was a little weird for me. I'd rather have freezing cold the first week in January than the first week in March, so if it's an either/or choice, I'd prefer it were colder earlier than later.

Sometimes I get freaked out by that unusual warm weather, but I didn't this time.

I agree on "when it's appropriate."

It was weird, but it wasn't extreme. I was a little disappointed there wasn't any snow, but I can deal with it.

All bets are off, for the future, though. We could have a snowy, cold winter through April, for all I know. That would not be fun.

Particularly since I've got 6 plane flights I've got to take between now and April. Well, that's just par for the course nowadays.

Well... some of those are bound to pay off. ;-)

I assume they're all to warmer places than here?

In February, I'm off to Montana & South Dakota, but in late March, I'm going to AZ.

There's a chance next week of snowshoeing & I was thinking about doing it b/c I might in MT, too, so I feel like I need to know what it's like.

What, like a 60% chance of snowshoeing, with an afternoon high?

The friend I'm seeing mentioned skiing, and I told him I don't ski, but I'd try snowshoeing (I'll be going slower when I fall).

You've just got to learn how to fall!

True - and I have a really weak upper body, so getting up afterward when I have fallen skiing has always been a problem.

Downhill? Cross-country shouldn't be a problem. X-C is like snowshoeing, only the footgear glides. Unless you get on a hill. Then it's less like snowshoeing.

Yes, that's what I've fallen in - I guess it just colors everything else (Keiran + long extension on feet = fall in the snow and not be able to get up).

I used to cross-country all the time. Then I had a chance to go downhill skiing. I thought it would be a piece of cake, but the two are so different, that I couldn't get it at all. And the way the boots are affixed to the skis makes it very difficult to do anything except slide down the hills - including walking around and getting up.

XC skis at only attached at the very front of the toes, so the whole assembly is flexible. You can actually kneel with your knees touching the skis. And moving on skis is actually unlike snowshoeing, but similar to skating.
